Its not Gilligan's Island but i was happily stranded there for 3 hours. Mickie Finnz on Fremont Street in the Neonopolis area has one of my favorite Happy Hours downtown. From 4-7 they serve 2 for 1 Jameson (my whiskey) and 2 for 1 beers and have great food specials but thats not what makes this place awesome. The atmosphere and entertainment really help this place stand out. I recently found out this is their 10th anniversary under the worlds largest pint glass so I thought Id finally do my review of them.
This place is very colorful, as you walk in you notice the obvious Island theme. Surf boards adorning the bar walls and a great crane/lobster machine right inside the entrance usually pulls a good crowd. The patio's wicker chairs have plush seats you could fall asleep in if your not careful and tiki torches throughout provide dual purpose; keep the theme and keep you warm on chili evenings. There is an outside "window" bar with tall bar chairs facing inside, perfect for people watching or listening to music. Speaking of music, the solo guitarist I have had the pleasure of hearing more then half a dozen times was Brett Cohen. Brett was and is an amazing guitarist as well as an excellent singer. It might be because he takes requests, drinks fireball or maybe it's the way he interacts with the crowd no matter the size but he has a great presence about him and you can tell he loves what he does.
I got a chance to talk with him a few times and i can tell you without a doubt he, alone, is worth a visit just in case all the other positives from this review are not.
The food here is delicious, from fish tacos to Rib plates everything I've tried has been tasty and priced very reasonable for the quality and atmosphere they provide. I have not sat in any of the booths against the walls or tables, other then the non-smoking island table as you walk in, so I cant speak on that experience. What Ive seen while sitting at the bar is usually a fast paced environment and when it comes to wait staff and bartenders they have all been friendly and (especially the bartenders) very knowledgeable. One great added feature at Mickie Finnz is they offer gaming at a limited number of bar top seats. I easily wasted three hours (Happy Hour) there and would do it again, tomorrow, if I had the chance. See you in May fellas.
